MY HYBRIDIZING ARTICLES
These three articles were
written in 2003/2004, and originally published in the West Jersey Rose
Society newsletter. They are a chronicle of what I experienced during
my first "true" year attempting a breeding program of my own.
It is very much written from the perspective of a beginner with other
beginners in mind.
*A
Rose of My Own; Journal of a Novice Hybridizer - Chapter 1 : This
chapter covers various methods for collecting pollen, storing pollen,
and applying pollen. Addresses when and how to select blooms from which
to collect pollen. Alternative methods are addressed as well as what
I found to work the best in my own activities. First introduces what
I refer to as the "pollination window", which is simply the
period of time you have to make crosses to ensure they will mature before
the first damaging frost.
*A
Rose of My Own; Journal of a Novice Hybridizer - Chapter 2 : The
second installment reviews in more depth how to tell when hips are ready
to be harvested. Various seed cleaning, treatment and storage methods
are also discussed.
*A
Rose of My Own; Journal of a Novice Hybridizer - Chapter 3 : This
chapter walks you through the stratification and germination phases,
planting newly germinated seedlings, and their initial care.
A
Rose of My Own; Journal of a Novice Hybridizer - Chapter 4: The
final installment of the series takes a look back on my progress throughout
the year and summarizes a few of the highlights I encountered along
the way. The first preview of my 2003 germinating seedlings is shared
in this chapter.
*2003 American
Rose Society "Award of Merit" winner for articles published
in a local society's newsletter. (Chapter 4 was published in 2004).
